This synthetic material comes in three different forms, ranging from ultra-affordable to high-end, even close to the cost of natural wood. Its durability depends on the quality of the materials and the strength of the top wear layer.
Types of vinyl flooring
Sheet vinyl
Sheet vinyl flooring averages between €2 to €6 per square metre for materials.
Advantages: It is the most affordable of your vinyl options. Highly scratch and stain resistant. Waterproof, making it excellent for wet rooms. Has fewer seams during installation.
Cons: Due to its affordability, it is generally not good for the value of your home. If damaged, entire sheets must be replaced. Potentially high VOC emissions.
Luxury vinyl planks
Luxury vinyl planks floorboards cost €5 to €25 per square metre.
Benefits: Makes a great faux wood floor. Can be reinforced with urethane, making it stain and scratch resistant. Can also be laid over an existing floor without the need for nailing or gluing.
Disadvantages: Cannot be refinished. Long planks are more difficult to replace than LVT. Can have high VOC emissions.
Luxury vinyl tiles
Luxury vinyl tiles cost €5 to €25 per square metre.
Advantages: Great for moisture sensitive areas. Tile shape is ideal for replicating stone tiles. Also comes as faux wood tiles. The top layer can be reinforced with urethane, making it even more resistant to stains and scratches. The smaller tiles are easier to replace than LVP or sheet vinyl.
Disadvantages: This material cannot be finished. Check each product for VOC emission ratings.
Commercial vinyl
Commercial-grade vinyl flooring materials average between €3 and €15 per square metre.
Advantages: Specifically designed to withstand heavy traffic. Uses a special coating that can take a beating. The photographic layer contains beautiful hi-fi printed images. Comes in ultra-realistic designs.
Disadvantages: Generally the most expensive option. Once the top layer wears off, it cannot be re-finished.
