Your gutter mainly does its job when nobody is looking at it. Usually that works perfectly well. Until a heavy autumn shower sends the water over the edge instead of down the downpipe.
Leaves rarely sort that problem out among themselves.

A large tree next to your home looks nice. Three large trees may look even better. Your gutters may have a slightly different opinion.
Leaves are the most obvious problem, but blossom, seeds, small twigs and moss can also collect in the gutter. If your home is in a green or wooded area or directly underneath large trees, preferably check and clean the gutters twice a year: once in spring and again at the end of autumn.
After a storm or heavy leaf fall: have a quick look
You don't need to inspect the gutter after every rain shower. After a heavy storm or a lot of leaf fall, an extra check does make sense. Especially if you can already see leaves from the ground or notice during rain that the water is no longer flowing properly towards the downpipe.
When is the best time to clean your gutters?
The most important time is at the end of autumn. Wait until most of the leaves have fallen and clean the gutter before winter really begins.
This prevents a layer of wet leaves from sitting in the gutter for months.
Late autumn: the most important clean
October and November are the months when gutters tend to fill up naturally. Clean them too early and you may be back doing the same job two weeks later. It therefore makes sense to wait until most of the leaves have fallen.
Cleaning before winter is particularly sensible for zinc gutters. Wet organic material sitting there for months isn't exactly a wellness programme for zinc.
Spring: especially if there are lots of trees
If you have lots of trees around your home, check the gutter again in spring. Blossom, small branches, seeds and old debris can once again build up around the outlet.
Why do you need to clean your gutters?
A gutter has a fairly simple job: collect rainwater and send it towards the downpipe. For that to work, the water needs somewhere to go.
A handful of leaves isn't much of a problem. A year's worth of leaves, moss and twigs is a different story.
The gutter can overflow
If the outlet becomes blocked, the water level in the gutter rises. During heavy rain, it eventually spills over the edge. You'll usually notice a small waterfall running down the outside of the house.
The downpipe can become blocked
Debris from the gutter can enter the downpipe and become stuck further down. Rainwater can then barely drain away.
Is the gutter clean but water is still standing in it or barely flowing through the downpipe? The downpipe may be blocked.
Water can run along the facade and roof edge
Water that repeatedly spills over the same part of the gutter ends up where it isn't supposed to be. Think of the facade, wooden fascia boards or connections around the roof.

Small defects are harder to spot
Cleaning is also a useful inspection moment. Once the gutter is empty, it's much easier to spot a small crack, loose joint, damaged bracket or another weak point.
A clean gutter doesn't prevent every leak. A worn joint, crack or damaged section won't magically repair itself because the leaves have gone. If water is actually leaking through the gutter, have the gutter repaired.
How do you know your gutters need cleaning sooner?
You don't always need a calendar. Your gutter usually provides enough hints of its own.
Check it sooner when:
water flows over the edge of the gutter during rain;
water remains in the gutter for a long time after a rain shower;
you can see leaves, grass or moss sticking out of the gutter from ground level;
hardly any water comes through the downpipe;
water repeatedly runs down one particular part of the facade;
you see damp marks below the gutter or around the fascia board;
the gutter is clearly full of twigs and leaves after a storm.
Does the gutter still overflow after cleaning? Then something else may be wrong. The downpipe may be blocked, the gutter may not have the correct slope or part of it may be damaged.
What does a professional do when cleaning your gutters?
A proper gutter clean involves a little more than removing one handful of leaves and climbing back down.
Inspect the gutter. The professional checks where debris has accumulated and looks for visible damage.
Remove leaves, twigs and other debris. A lot of material can collect around the outlet in particular.
Clear the drainage opening. The opening towards the downpipe needs to be able to handle the rainwater properly.
Check the water flow. This shows whether the water can once again flow towards the downpipe.
Check the gutter for problems. Think of small cracks, loose joints or components that are no longer properly secured.
Make the result visible. Especially with high or difficult-to-reach gutters, photos of the result can be useful.
In suitable situations, some professionals use a gutter vacuum with a camera, allowing the gutter to be cleaned and checked from ground level. Not every professional uses the same equipment and not every property is suitable for this method.
If the professional discovers that the gutter itself is damaged, cleaning alone won't solve the problem. In that case, you can have the gutter repaired.

When should you leave it to a professional?
If you need to work high up, reach across an extension, climb onto the roof or can't position the ladder firmly and safely, the decision becomes fairly straightforward.
