Type of exterior paints

Tuesday 15 June 2021

Do the window frames need a new coat of paint, or does the shed need a new layer of paint? Then you would like to know what the best types of paint for outside are. You can use wall paint, stain or varnish and you have the choice between transparent, coloured, opaque and various types of gloss. With so many different paints to choose from, it's no wonder you're wondering what the best choice is. When you paint outside, you have to take more things into account than when you paint a wall inside. This is because a fence, gazebo or decking depends on the weather conditions. In addition, paint has to last longer, after all, you don't want to have to repaint your decking every six months.

Difference between indoor and outdoor paint

It could be that your window frames need a new coat of paint or your decking needs to be stained. You can choose from a large assortment of outdoor paints. But why do you need outdoor paints? There is a difference between paint that is used indoors and paint that is used outdoors. When you paint a wall indoors, the paint has to be easy to clean and must be both scratch and wear resistant. In addition, the extent to which a paint is covered is also important. When you paint outside it is the other way around. For example, wood has the property of working; over time it can expand or shrink. Therefore paint for outside needs to be both flexible and elastic. If you - by mistake - use interior paint when painting window frames, over time you can see cracks in the applied paint. And that is a waste of your work.

What should you pay attention to when buying paint?

When buying paint for outside, there are a number of factors to consider

Paint life cycle: How long will the paint last? Generally speaking, it is good if you choose paint that lasts 5 to 6 years. That way you will not have to paint your window frames or fence as often.
Coverage: The better the coverage of the paint, the fewer layers you will have to paint. You will therefore be able to finish painting more quickly.
Gloss level: In general, it is best to choose an exterior paint with a high gloss. As a rule, a higher gloss level also means that dirt adheres less.
Good price-quality ratio: With so many different types of paint it is easy to choose the cheapest, but this does not always mean that you have made the best choice. If you choose a paint that lasts a long time, you often pay more. But you don't have to paint as often.
Different degrees of gloss

If you are going to paint your window frames, you can choose from various degrees of gloss for the types of paint used outside. Which one is best depends on the result you want to achieve. You can choose from matt paint, an exterior paint with silk glaze or a high-gloss paint. As a rule, a high-gloss paint is chosen most often. This has to do with the fact that it is easier to clean and you have less trouble with dirt adhering to it. In addition, this paint remains good for longer. Silk-gloss paint is often less durable and you will have to repaint your dormer sooner. There is also a good chance that this paint will flake off after a few months. This means you have to start all over again with a new coat of paint. Would you also like to see the properties of the wood? Then it is best to use a high gloss. With a higher gloss, the surface is more clearly accentuated.
