Smoke detector will be mandatory

Monday 20 December 2021

Did you know that from 1 July 2022 it is mandatory to install a smoke detector in your home? Installing a smoke detector has been mandatory for new-build homes for some time now. This obligation will now also apply to existing homes. All floors of a house must be equipped with a smoke detector. In addition, a confined space through which an escape route runs must also be equipped with a smoke detector.
I am glad that these regulations have been introduced, because these regulations are intended to save lives. In the event of a fire, most victims are caused by inhalation of the smoke. When you sleep, your nose doesn't work, so you don't smell a burning smell. If a short circuit causes a fire, the smell of smoke will unfortunately not wake you up. Smoke contains many toxic gases. As a result, you often quickly become deeply unconscious within a few minutes. Your hearing functions normally while you sleep. If a fire alarm goes off, you usually still have enough time to safely leave a building.

Where is the best place to install a smoke detector?

An urgent advice is to have a smoke detector installed in the hall and on the landing. These are usually the escape routes when a fire breaks out. It is extra safe to hang a smoke detector in the living room and all bedrooms. For maximum security, equip all rooms where a fire could start with a smoke detector.
A smoke alarm should never be placed in a draft or near mechanical ventilation. The minimum distance from a corner or a wall must be at least 50 centimeters.

Which smoke detectors are mandatory?

To ensure safety and proper functioning, smoke detectors must comply with Dutch law. That is why the European EN 14604 certificate for a smoke detector has been made mandatory. Does a smoke detector not run on batteries but on mains power? Then the NEN 2555 certificate is also required. These certificates guarantee that the smoke detector works correctly and properly, detects smoke in time, emits a loud and clear sound signal and is easy to install.
Furthermore, the installation of at least one (wired) smoke detector per floor will be mandatory from 1 July 2022.
